PLOT / Cover Illustration

I had the opportunity to create a cover illustration for PLOT magazine this month. The article "Ølkrigen" (beer wars) is about large Norwegian brewery's buying up small brewery's and monopolizing the market. The illustration is a play on this concept, with the big fish eating the little fish. The issue is out on shelves now, so pick yourself up a copy!

I have officially lived in Norway for 2 years now!
I've had my fair share of ups and downs, been completely humbled and had some of the best experiences of my life.
All the amazing friends I have made are for life, and the inspiring artists, designers, musicians I have met and worked with have made it worthwhile ten fold, I am more inspired than ever. Thank you to all the people that have helped guide me through uncharted territories, I am incredibly grateful.
I couldn't be more happy to call Norway home and start my family here.

I am very happy to announce that the LIFELINES series will be be traveling to Australia to be exhibited at 19KAREN gallery. I just finished four new pieces, and have posted a section on my site with all the photographs, check it out here. It has been interesting to feel the development of the series while doing these new drawings. There is a natural progression that has brought a more balanced sense of order in the approach, but still maintains a loose chaotic sensibility. Thinking back a year ago when I started the series, and where I am now, this is a quite accurate reflection of my life as well. I am curious to see how the series will continue to develop even further over time.

This is actually the second time I have done a copy of this piece. There is a particular intimate feeling that is captured between the two characters, which I really enjoy. This version is quite a bit larger than my first attempt. I am planning to start going larger with these pieces again. More to come soon.

Where to start. Escher is a legend, one of the worlds most recognized and commercialized artists. He has become somewhat of a household name, common place even for those who don´t care too much for art. We learned about Escher in Art Appreciate from the 1st grade, so like many people, I was taken from an early age to his work. What I admire most about Escher was the incredible dedication he had to his craft and the ingenuity he expressed in his pieces. During his lifetime he created 448 lithographs, woodcuts and wood engravings, and over 2000 drawings and sketches. www.mcescher.com has a great archive of his work and is filled with good information. This piece was inspired from one of his self portrait lithographs from 1929.

Frida Kahlo has been a great source of inspiration in my work. Her work is simple, bold, and filled with a vibrant expression of struggle and passion. She is revered as a master of the portrait painting, and pushed art into new territory as a female painter. Having suffered illness and injury for the greater part of her life, her work possess a strong voice for her life experience and beliefs. Landscape Exhibition

The show will be in June in Selje, Norway. The pieces are inspired form this specific area on the west coast around Stadt. One of many things that I love about making artwork is the element of surprise. I will often start a piece with no specific direction, no deeper meaning, it is a completely uninhibited image making process. It keeps art interesting for me. I often switch up my direction completely, finding a healthy balance between making pieces that are structured and those that are free. Summer Exhibition

The drawings are inspired from photographs I took while exploring the local scenery on the west coast. I´ve always loved traditional print as a medium. I recently got the urge create a lino print. This particular piece was loosely inspired by one of my all-time favorite bands DR. DOG and their song "take me into town" We are planning to do a summer exhibition/party at Brennerieien in June where each of us will create a print for sale. I guess I wanted to brush up on the print skills a little before the show. Here is a post sharing some in-process work. This project is still under cover because the design is not finished, and the album not yet released. I can say that it is electronic based, and will be released as a 3 part vinyl which is pretty sweet. The concept of the artwork is to show change and development, following the theme of the album "Processory" It is supposed to have a slight retro-future feel. I am working with Oslo based agency Anti

Riksteatret /// Baby Universe

I recently worked with Riksteatret to create artwork and a poster to promote the show Baby Universe. The show was created by Wakka Wakka, a theater production company from New York City, and is in cooperation with Nordland Visual Theater and Riksteatret. Baby Universe recently premiered in NYC and was met with great reviews. Read The New York Times critics picks review here

The foundation of the show is based on Steven Hawkings theory that in order to maintain long-term survival as humans, we will need to move away from Earth and find a way to exist in outer space. Read more about the show on the Wakka Wakka website

Baby Universe will be coming to Oslo in January and will be touring all over Norway. I look forward to seeing it!

Just picked up a new sketchbook the other day, something exciting about tackling a new book of blank pages. Dødpop /// Record Release show

Last night was the Dødpop Vol. 2 record release show at Parkteatret in Oslo, which turned out to be a great success. I worked with the group to design the album, which quite clearly has a very Norway centric theme. It was a fun concept to work with, and is a great demonstration of Dødpop's campaign to spread skweee across the globe. I managed to take a few photos during the show which are shown above. I may post a few more in the photography section of my site.

Lifelines

It could be the fact that winter is approaching quickly, but I decided to get back into the Lifelines series a bit, and photograph some of the drawings again for improved viewing. I plan to keep this series going this winter, it is the perfect release for cabin fever and long winter days. I have thoughts for pushing it in new directions and at a greater scale. I have worn glasses since the 3rd grade, and have never seen such beautiful spectacles as that of designer Andreas Licht, and his company Herrlicht. These are finely crafted works of art, and I would love to get myself a pair. Their studio is based in Erfert, Germany. Out of pure coincidence, Erfert bought the rights to use one of my Dad's fonts exclusively for all of the town's signage this past year. Looks like I have 2 more reasons to visit Germany! Shortly after my wife and I got married we moved up to Burlington, VT for the winter season, and I met Torrey and his wife Tessa. Paul Jensen is one of the foremost pioneers of building hollow wooden surfboards. Surfing magazines 2009 shaper of the year, Tom Wegener honored Paul by calling him "The godfather of the hollow wooden surfboard renaissance" Combining his love for surfing, incredible wood working skills, attention to detail, consideration for aesthetic beauty, and innovative approach to making high performance hollow surfboards, he has permanently carved out a name for himself in the world of surfing. I think the most appealing part of his approach to it all, is that he is in it for the love of sharing his methods around the world, and not just to make another dollar by selling his boards. Paul has given workshops in Australia, France, Ireland, Holland, the isle of Jersey, Portugal, and the United States, and has no plans of stopping there. I spoke with him a few months back about hosting a workshop here in Norway, so if you have an interest, get in touch with me, I am dying to make this happen. On his website Paul keeps an extensive blog with writing and photographs covering his trips around the world, Q&A, class information, and plenty of thoughtful insight. Ernesto Neto

This past weekend I had the great pleasure of going to a retrospective exhibit of Ernesto Neto's work at the Astrup Fearnely Museum in Oslo, Norway. Neto is a brazilian artist well known for his incredible installation works. This was one of the most inspiring and memorable exhibits I have ever attended, and likely will go back to get a second dose. In contrast to most gallery shows that can feel stuffy, serious, and uninviting, Neto's work completely draws the viewer in with a full sensory experience. Many of the pieces invite the audience to interact, touch, smell, and experience the work. When going from room to room I found myself filled with a big smile, excited to see the next piece, and noticed that the work was having the same positive effect on everyone in attendance. I walked away inspired, and couldn't help but think, how can I engage viewers in the same way with my work. I am searching for that answer now.

I just picked this piece up from the framer, and very happy with the results. Something about getting the work into a nice frame makes it "official". With the move to Norway last year I sadly had to leave behind many framed works and paintings, but now the walls in our apartment are starting to look more complete as I fill up the space.

West Coast /// Norway

I have always had an interest in drawing and painting landscapes. The ability to digest the landscape as a subject, takes much concentration and practice. For the past 7 years I have mostly been surrounded by New York City landscape, so it has been quite refreshing to step out into nature and draw organic forms. This small series of pencil drawings are from the West Coast of Norway. It is near impossible to interpret the grand scale of these scenes into the confines of a sheet of paper, but none the less, a great challenge to undertake.

Matt has been one of my all time best friends since we met in college at the Ringling School of Art and Design. He has such an incredible talent and passion for art, and has pushed me further as an artist than anyone else I know. His work spans from drawing, painting, and customizing vinyl toys, and has mastered each one of these disciplines. He is continuously evolving and it has been amazing to see the development of his style over time. Matt and I lived together in Bushwick Brooklyn for 2 years when I first moved to NYC. It became ritual every night to sit down and draw each other at least several times in the sketch books we kept (in addition to throwing water balloons off our rooftop). Its safe to say that I would not have the passion for drawing that I have today if it weren't for this period of time living with Matt. We have shared all the trials and tribulations of the "path of the artist" together, and many many good laughs along the way. Cheers Matt

1 year in Norway

Today marks the 1 year anniversary of moving to Norway with my wife! It has been one of the greatest adventures of my life, filled with ups and downs that have pushed me to exceed challenges I have never before faced. I have met some of the most incredible people during my time here that will be friends for life. Our time here has been evenly distributed between living in the countryside and the city. Our first 6 months were on the west coast in a small town called Selje, the nature and atmosphere here are beyond comprehension. Our last 6 months have been in Oslo, a great city with a rich history that is filled with many inspiring museums, art, music, and beautiful people. With the exception of missing my family and friends, I am very happy to be here, thank you Norway!

Nick Baxter

I first met Nick over 7 years ago and it has been incredible to watch his talent progress and exceed boundaries unimaginable as both a tattoo artist and painter. His work is so well considered in both technique, composition, color theory, and content, that it is no wonder he has become one of the most respected tattoo artists in the world. I feel incredibly fortunate to adorn a full sleeve on my right arm (I think I have clocked over 30 hours in the chair) and subsequently we have become good friends. Nick came to visit Norway this past March and in addition to hitting up every museum Olso had to offer, we managed to create 4 collaborative pieces over the course of a week (I will post these later) Nick is one of the most highly motivated persons I know, and incredibly inspiring to be around. check out more of his work here

Hurricane BILL!

Every now and then a massive storm tears up the East coast of the US and brings with it some epic swell. I really wish that I was back in New York right now sharing the joy of Hurricane Bill with some of my best friends. I hope for their sake it creates life long memories (no jealousy here). Survival Agents

This past summer I spent my days surfing, camping, relaxing, and decided not to take on any large art projects. Everyone needs time to refuel the batteries, and build up new inspiration. I do believe however, that as an artist it is crucial to keep sharpening the skills, so I decided to keep the hand-eye coordination focussed and do some life drawings of different vegetables and fruit. Drawing fundamentals are at the heart of all the work I do, and I really enjoyed putting together this small series of pieces. I also took the time to research the powerful properties that some of these fantastic little food gems we consume possess:

ONION

I first met Jason back in 99' at the Ringling School of Art and Design. We shared many of the same views on life, including the love of skateboarding, and soon became fast friends. Jason is one of the most inspired and inspiring people you will ever meet, there is a whirlwind of creativity circling his being. When he first started MAKR they were primarily producing their beautifully crafted leather wallets, and we collaborated on a series of wallets inspired by Norwegian landscapes (you can find these in the design section of my site). Since then MAKR has evolved into what seems like an endless platform to realize Jason's dream projects. The consideration for design, functionality, and aesthetic beauty is unmatched. It has been incredibly inspiring to watch the evolution. He also maintains a blog that I frequent on the regular.

SKATE /// Ervik, Norway

My wife grew up on the west coast of Norway in a small town called Selje. Her family still owns the house that she grew up in, and we spend most of our vacation time here. Aside from the spectacular scenery and relaxing atmosphere, there also happens to be some of the best surf spots in Norway. Lucky me! We spent all of July soaking it up, camping, surfing, fishing, hiking.......I met some great people out in the water surfing and they invited me out to a skate session they were having one night. Built inside an old barn, is one of the cleanest mini ramps I have ever seen. I got some nice shots of the evening, and among many who were present that night was Norway's very own Karston Kleppan, the guy rips.

I have been designing skateboards for Blades in NYC for 5 years now, wow, time flies. They recently got in touch for some new ideas with no limitations. This is why I love working with these guys, total freedom, getting to ride my own decks, and overall amazing people to work with. What more could you ask for in a client. For our one year wedding anniversary this past May, my wife Sunniva and I got a Bonsai tree.
We live a pleasant walk through Prospect Park, from the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.
If you have an ounce of appreciation for nature, I highly recommend paying a visit. You will not be dissappointed,
It is here, that we both were awed by the incredible art of Bonsai.
